Throwing away orange peels? In vain! You can make candied fruit from them that is better than store-bought ones

Expert of the online publication BelNovosti, chef Yulia Arkhipova, assures: “Orange zest is not garbage, but a gold mine for homemade desserts.”

Candied peels are sweet, crispy and incredibly aromatic, and their preparation does not require any money or complex skills.

The magazine "Sweets without Harm" included this recipe in the top 5 healthy desserts, and here's why: the peel contains pectin, which improves digestion, and essential oils, which strengthen the immune system.

How to cook

Peel 4 oranges, cutting off only the orange part of the peel (the white part is bitter). Cut it into thin strips or squares. Cover with cold water and soak for 3 days, changing the water every 8-10 hours. This will remove the bitterness.

Then boil the zest in syrup (1 cup water + 2 cups sugar) for 20 minutes over low heat – the peel will become transparent and soft. Place the candied fruit on parchment, dry for 6-8 hours and roll in sugar or powder.

Secrets of Perfect Candied Fruits

Add a star anise or cinnamon stick to the syrup – they will add a spicy aroma.

Store the candied fruit in a glass jar with a tight lid – this way they will stay crispy for up to a month.

If the peel is too tough, dry it in the oven at 50°C for 1-2 hours after cooking.

1. In baking: Replace raisins in muffins, cupcakes or cookies.
