Are you sure your curtains make your room cozier? Probably not — and that's because even the perfect fabric can be a flop if hung incorrectly.
Imagine: expensive curtains, matched to the furniture, but the windows look as if they were decorated in the dark. Three fatal mistakes turn curtains from an element of luxury into evidence of bad taste.
The first mistake is short curtains that hang like shy guests on the edge of a chair. When the canvas stops 10 cm from the floor, the room loses its verticality, and the window seems smaller. It's like wearing trousers that don't reach your boots: even expensive material won't save you from feeling careless.

Ideal curtains either barely touch the floor or form a soft wave on it. If you are afraid of dust, choose the first option, but never cut the fabric "butt-to-toe".
The second mistake is invisible curtain rods. Thin metal tubes that bend under the weight of the curtains look like a cheap fake loft style. The curtain rod should be massive and visually complete the composition. For example, a wooden beam in a rustic interior or a brass rod in a classic living room.
If the curtains are heavy, add forged brackets that will highlight their texture. The curtain rod is a frame for your window: without it, even a masterpiece loses its value.
The third mistake is single-layering. Tulle without thick curtains or curtains without lining is like a pie without filling. The layers work together: tulle diffuses light, thick fabric maintains privacy, and the lining protects against fading.
But there is a nuance: both layers should be wide enough. Curtains that barely cover the edge of the window when gathered resemble a curtain in a school gym. Calculate the width so that when unfolded, the fabric forms soft folds, and does not stretch like a sheet.
How to fix this? Start with measurements. The height of the cornice is 15-20 cm higher than the window, to visually “raise” the ceiling. The width is 30-40 cm wider than the opening on each side, so that when the curtains are open, the window seems larger.
Choose fabric wisely: linen and cotton add lightness, velvet and wool add luxury, synthetics often look cheap. If in doubt, take a sample home and see how the material behaves in different lighting.
Color is a separate story. Bright curtains in a small room turn it into a candy box. Patterns with large flowers became outdated in the last century. It is better to choose a neutral shade a tone darker or lighter than the walls - this way the interior will get depth, but will not be overloaded. If you want an accent - let it be one curtain belt with an ornament, and not the entire canvas.
Curtains are more than just fabric on a window. They are a filter that changes the light and a frame that sets the mood.
Check: if your curtains don't touch the floor, hang on a flimsy rod and consist of one layer, you're missing out on a chance to make your home cozier. Fix these mistakes, and even a cloudy day outside will become part of your design.
