Recent studies have shown that certain foods may reduce the risk of developing colon cancer.

Those that contain calcium are especially useful in this regard.

In the course of their work, British scientists studied information about the diet of more than 500,000 women, including 97 products and various nutrients.

The average duration of the analysis period was 16 years.

Products rich in calcium took the lead in terms of health benefits.

Milk and yogurt

The study found that consuming an extra 300 mg of calcium daily reduced the risk of colon cancer by 17%.

A daily glass of milk (200 grams) reduces this probability by an average of 14%, while 50 grams of yogurt reduces it by 8%.

Among milk-loving Europeans, the risk was reduced by 40% (for those who drink 200 grams of the drink per day).

According to scientists, calcium binds bile and fatty acids in the intestines, reducing their carcinogenic effect.

In addition, it strengthens the intestinal mucosa.

The protective properties of milk and yogurt are explained not only by the presence of calcium in them.

Magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and riboflavin, which are present in these products, also play a significant role.

However, ice cream and cheese did not show any positive effect.

What other foods are useful?

The second most effective foods for reducing colon cancer risk are breakfast cereals, fruits and whole grains.

They contain such useful substances as fiber, folic acid, and vitamin C.

In this case, the main merit in providing protection is recognized to be due to fiber.

According to scientists, it accelerates the transit of food through the intestines and reduces the concentration of potentially carcinogenic substances, reducing their impact on the intestinal walls.

Fiber also forms short-chain fatty acids, which reduce acidity and prevent the formation of harmful bile acids.
