Currants will wither in a month: how to save bushes in early spring and get berries the size of cherries

Are you looking forward to summer to pick a bucket of currants, but the bushes look like limp panicles?

It's not the frost or the bad soil that's to blame, but your actions (or inaction) in March!

The first mistake is ignoring the "cold shower". As soon as the snow melts, but before the buds swell, pour boiling water over the bushes from a watering can.

This will kill the mites and aphids that overwinter in the bark and suck the juices out of the shoots. Don't worry - hot water won't harm the plant, because the roots are still dormant under the frozen ground.

The second mistake is pruning "by eye". Don't just remove old branches, but cut them at an angle of 45 degrees, leaving 5-7 buds. Otherwise, the currant will spend its energy on recovery, not on berries.

Did you know that currant bushes love fish? Bury frozen fish remains (heads, tails) under the roots - phosphorus and calcium will make the berries large and sweet.

But the main secret is "drunken feeding". Dilute 100 g of yeast in 10 liters of water, add a glass of sugar, let it ferment for 3 days and water the bushes.

Yeast will activate soil bacteria and the currants will explode with growth!

And after the “hot shower”, wrap the bushes in agrofibre for 2-3 days - the greenhouse effect will awaken the dormant buds.

And if you notice swellings on the branches (gall aphids), lubricate them with tar mixed with vegetable oil (1:3). Aphids hate this smell and will run away within 24 hours.

Another trick is the "sugar trap." Hang plastic bottles with pierced holes filled with sugar syrup on the bushes. The scouts will fly to the bait and will not return to the colony, interrupting the breeding cycle.

Don't forget about the "night guards". Plant marigolds or calendula around the currants - their roots secrete substances that suppress fungi.

And if the bushes are attacked by a moth, lay fresh tomato leaves under them. The alkaloids in their composition will scare away the butterflies that lay eggs.

And the last life hack: when the first leaves appear, spray them with iodine solution (10 drops per bucket of water). This will protect against powdery mildew and increase the sugar content of the berries.

The currants will bear fruit so abundantly that the branches will have to be tied up!
