How experienced gardeners prepare conifers for winter: they will survive the winter without losses

Even winter-hardy spruce, pine, fir, juniper, thuja, yew and other conifers need protection from severe frosts, icy winds and bright winter sun.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told about what needs to be done so that coniferous plants survive the winter months without problems and greet you in the spring healthy and beautiful.

Top dressing

Conifers that are exhausted during the season need additional feeding using potassium-phosphorus fertilizers.

After such a procedure, the plants' immunity and resistance to cold increase: potassium promotes lignification of shoots, and phosphorus strengthens the roots.

To feed coniferous plants, you can use special complex fertilizers, for example, Fertika Kristalon, Florovit or Bona Forte for conifers, or you can get by with superphosphate, potassium monophosphate, potassium sulfate or borofoska.

Please note: you must apply fertilizer one month before the first frost.

Treatment for diseases

During winter thaws, the risk of conifers contracting fungal or bacterial diseases increases.

Therefore, in the fall, be sure to treat the plantings with such preparations as "Abiga-Peak" and "Rakurs". Copper-containing products are also used for treatment. The exception is copper sulfate, which can cause needle burns.

Moisture-charging irrigation

Thanks to this gardening measure, the plants receive a supply of water for the winter and will not burn out at the end of winter.

If you are dealing with young seedlings, one bucket of water is enough. A 3-4 year old plant requires two buckets, and adult trees and bushes – at least 5-8 buckets.
