Summer residents should not rush to close the season until all important matters have been completed.

When it seems that everything is ready, look around again. Surely you will remember something important.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist, agronomist and landscape designer, told how to cover compost.

When to cover

There is no better time than the end of autumn. At the end of November, the weather becomes consistently cold or even frosty.

What to cover with

There are two problems that can arise when preparing natural fertilizer.

In the first case, the compost may freeze in winter, and in the second, it may suffocate if covered with inappropriate materials.

Therefore, the best option for covering compost is hay or straw.

It would not be a bad idea to cover it with burlap or spunbond. Both materials are breathable and will protect the shelter from strong winds.

Why hide?

You often hear that a cover will maintain the working temperature of a compost heap or pit.

In fact, the task is different: to ensure the preservation of microorganisms that help convert plant residues into fertilizer.

For reference

Compost is an organic fertilizer obtained through the decomposition of organic materials under the influence of bacteria, fungi, worms and insects.
