How to Protect Conifers from Sunburn: An Experienced Gardener's Strategy

21.02.2025 14:12

Protecting coniferous crops from the aggressive winter and early spring sun requires a well-thought-out approach based on an understanding of plant biology.

A specialist with 15 years of experience shares a proven method that minimizes the risk of damage to needles.

The start of covering work is timed to coincide with the establishment of stable zero temperatures, usually in November.

To create protective structures, white non-woven material with a density of 60 g/m² is used, ensuring the diffusion of light without complete darkening.

A frame system made of metal rods with a diameter of 8–10 mm forms a strong dome that retains its shape under snow load.

A mandatory condition is to maintain a 20-centimeter gap between the cover and the plant - this space creates an air gap that prevents damping off.

During periods of heavy snowfall, it is recommended to regularly clean structures from sticky masses, maintaining the integrity of the frame.

Multi-level protection takes into account the size and age of plants.

For tall specimens, it is common practice to install reflective shields on the south side at a distance of 40 cm from the trunk.

Medium-sized crops are wrapped in material secured to a three-support frame made of wooden slats. Young shoots are covered with a double layer of agrofibre, securing it at the edges with stones or soil.

Removal of protective structures in the spring is carried out in stages: first, the northern side is opened, after 7-10 days the eastern and western parts are freed, and the southern sector remains shaded until the snow has completely melted.

This technique allows plants to adapt to increased solar activity without stress.
