Winter without snow is treacherous and experienced gardeners know this very well, so they are thinking about how to save the harvest now.

In such situations, the soil and plants suffer from frost and temperature changes, which would not be so bad if they were under a layer of snow.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", a scientist, agronomist and landscape designer, told about the threats that bad weather poses to strawberries.

Consequences of a snowless winter

Summer residents who were counting on their berry bushes to survive the winter under a layer of snow may start biting their elbows.

1. In snowless winters, the roots of plants suffer, even those that are frost-resistant.

2. For trees, a temperature drop to -15 degrees is considered critical.

3. If we are talking about young seedlings, then they should have been taken care of first, since they are most sensitive to cold.

How to save the harvest

It is important to prevent the roots from freezing. Therefore, the bed should be covered with straw or other materials.

The mulch layer should be 10-15 cm.

Along with this, you can cover the plantings with brushwood or spruce branches, which hold the snow well on the ground.

For ornamental crops, a frame and cover made of non-woven material will be required.

It is important to remember that snowless winters pose another threat to plants – they dry out the soil.

This circumstance also requires prompt intervention from the gardener.
