Have you noticed a strange white crust on the soil where your houseplants grow?
This is not harmless "decor", but an SOS signal from your green pets. If you ignore it, the plants may slow down their growth, lose leaves or even die.
But there is no need to panic - the solution is simpler than it seems.
The white layer on the soil is the result of mineral accumulation from tap water. Each watering leaves behind microscopic particles of salts and lime. Over time, they form a dense crust that blocks oxygen access to the roots and disrupts plant nutrition.
In nature, rainwater washes away excess substances, but at home this task falls on your shoulders.
Remove the problem
Carefully remove the top layer of soil (1-2 cm) along with the crust. Replace it with fresh soil mixed with coconut fiber or perlite - this will improve drainage and slow down the formation of crust.
Control the water
Tap water is the main source of the problem. Let it sit for 24 hours to evaporate the chlorine, or use filtered water. Rain or melted water at room temperature is ideal.
Review your feedings
Excessive fertilizers increase salt deposition. Reduce the frequency of fertilizing by half and always follow the dosage. Before adding nutrients, slightly moisten the soil - this will protect the roots from burning.
Check the drainage
Stagnant water in the pot accelerates the crystallization of salts. Make sure that there are holes in the bottom and that there is a layer of expanded clay or pebbles on the bottom of the pot. Water the plants only when the top layer of soil dries out by 1-2 cm.
These simple steps will not only get rid of the white coating, but also strengthen the health of the plants. In just a month, you will notice how the leaves become brighter and growth becomes more active.
