What Potato Varieties to Plant This Year: The Tubers Will Be Sweet as Nuts

Are you still planting Red Scarlett and wondering why the potatoes are tasteless?

In April, throw the Vitara variety into the ground - its tubers smell like hazelnuts even without fertilizer.

Or "kiwi": its rough skin repels the Colorado potato beetle, and the flesh is sweeter than carrots.

The main thing is to plant them in holes with onion peel. The onion phytoncides will drive away the wireworm, and the starch in the tubers will begin to turn into sugar.

But don't dig up the harvest before August: these varieties gain sweetness only towards the end of summer.

And never plant them next to pumpkin - it will make the potatoes bitter.

For "vitara", add a handful of sand to the hole - this will increase the crunch of the tubers.

The kiwi variety likes to be crowded: plant the tubers at a distance of 15 cm - this will make the skin thicker and the flesh oily.

It's been proven: after such an experiment, your neighbors will exchange your tubers for gold.

If a Colorado potato beetle appears, crush a couple of individuals and pour water over them - spray the bushes in a day. This trick has long been used by advanced vegetable growers who believe that the smell of dead relatives can scare away the rest.

After harvesting, sow rye in the garden bed - its roots will clear the soil of larvae.

And to prevent potatoes from turning green, store them in bags with dry mint. But never wash the tubers before storing them in the cellar - moisture will start rotting. Although it is hardly worth reminding experienced summer residents about this rule.
