Often, owners of plots of land seek to protect their property from the outside world. Hedges help them with this – a more than reasonable solution.
In landscape design, as the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh explains, there are different types of hedges. They are united by a common function.
All of them protect their owners from outside noise, dust and curious glances. Check out the existing types of hedges to choose the variety that you like best.

Evergreen and deciduous
This classification is based on seasonal changes of hedges. The evergreen option involves the use of coniferous plants. Deciduous hedges, respectively, consist of deciduous plants.
If you are keen on the idea of building an evergreen hedge, use thuja, spruce or juniper for this purpose. Please note: this option is not suitable for those who like variety.
You probably already guessed why – such a fence will look the same throughout the entire time. However, it also has an advantage – in winter the area will still be protected, not bare.
However, even after the leaves fall, deciduous hedges retain a slight but still opaqueness. The main thing is to approach the choice of plants responsibly.
Thorny shrubs are great for this purpose. Another option is species with dense branches. And yet it would be nice to add some conifers to the deciduous hedge.
Formed and free growing
Let's start with a description of shaped hedges. Their crown has a certain geometric shape. However, in order for the hedge to acquire it, it needs to be trimmed.
Formed hedges help to clearly organize the garden space. As a result of their use, the appearance of the garden is completed, which makes this type of hedge ideal for a regular style.
The shape of the hedge dramatically changes the visual impression of the entire area. Please note: not all plants can be trimmed the same way: shade-tolerant and light-loving plants require different crown shapes.
The free-growing option, in turn, is suitable for those who do not want to spend time and effort on trimming the hedge. They look great in landscape-style gardens.
But here too there are some conventions: a free-growing hedge can be arranged only when there is enough space in the garden. Plants whose crown looks beautiful in its natural form are suitable for it. To diversify the appearance of a green wall, include shrubs with flowers and fruits in such a hedge.
