It has previously been proven that men have a harder time coping with divorce and separation from a woman.

However, in the course of research conducted by the international scientific community, it was possible to find out that much in this regard depends on the person’s age.

The problem was studied by employees of universities in China, Finland and Germany. The results of the joint study were published in the scientific journal Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health.

Attention was paid to divorce, the breakdown of long-term relationships, and the termination of relationships due to the death of a partner.

To do this, data from the Finnish registry collected between 1996 and 2018 were analyzed. This concerns more than 228 thousand participants aged 50-70 years.

What we managed to find out

Of the total, 85,031 experienced the death of a spouse, 75,009 experienced divorce, and 68,604 separated after infidelity.

These people entered into new relationships on average within 2-3 years – that’s 53,460 people.

But mostly these were men who were not officially married or widowers.

It also turned out that separation after age 50 forced men and women to take antidepressants more often.

The dose was increased 1-4 years before the expected event.

Moreover, women took medications more often and in greater quantities than men, regardless of the reason for the separation.

Women increased their drug use by 6% in the four years before their breakup, while men increased their drug use by only 3% over the same period.
