When words flow like a river: how not to drown in a conversation with a chatterbox

There are people whose monologues resemble a tsunami: it is impossible to stop them, and the only way to escape is to run away.

But running is not always convenient, especially if the person you are talking to is a colleague, relative or neighbor.

Psychologists recommend starting with subtle signals. For example, moving away slightly or looking at your watch. This is often enough to make it clear that the time for the dialogue is over.

If hints don't work, it's time to take the initiative.

Short, specific questions help redirect the flow of words into a constructive channel. “You’re talking about a project — what’s the most difficult stage?” or “You mentioned a vacation — where’s definitely not worth going?”

This way, your interlocutor will feel that you are paying attention, and the conversation will become more meaningful.

Sometimes honesty without harshness saves. The phrase "Sorry, I have to finish my work today" sounds softer than an irritated "Enough already!" It is important to maintain a calm tone, even if impatience is boiling inside.

Experts warn: talkativeness can be a sign of loneliness.

Instead of trying to cut off the conversation, it’s worth offering an alternative. “Let’s discuss this over tea after work” or “Write me a voice message – I’ll answer in the evening.” This creates boundaries without offending the person.

But there are cases when only a polite departure can save you. If the other person does not respond to hints and requests, you can refer to an urgent call or an urgent matter. The main thing is not to turn the departure into a drama.

The irony is that the most talkative people rarely notice how their speech is eating up other people's time.

The task is not to re-educate the chatterbox, but to protect your resources.

Sometimes it's enough to smile, take a deep breath and let the words flow past like autumn rain outside the window.
