At what age does a cat become old: secrets of feline longevity

A graying muzzle, slow movements, and long naps in a favorite chair are often the first signs that a furry friend is entering his golden years.

Every cat ages differently, and age-related changes appear at different times, depending on the breed and living conditions of the pet.

Age periods

Most cats begin to show the first signs of aging at the age of 7-8 years. Purebred pets age faster than non-pedigree ones.

Siamese cats retain their youth longer than others, remaining active until 12-13 years. Persian representatives, on the contrary, show age-related changes earlier than others.

Physical changes

The coat loses its shine and elasticity, and gray hair appears, especially noticeable on the muzzle.

Muscle mass gradually decreases, the gait becomes less confident. Claws lose strength, require more frequent care. Paw pads become drier and harder.

Changes in behavior

Active games are followed by long periods of rest. The cat may lose interest in its favorite toys, preferring to quietly observe what is happening.

The character often becomes calmer and more docile, although some pets, on the contrary, become irritable.

Sleep characteristics

The duration of sleep increases to 18-20 hours per day. Older cats choose warmer places to rest, often settling near radiators or on sunny windowsills. Sleep becomes more sensitive, the pet may wake up often.

Eating habits

Appetite may become more selective. Older cats eat smaller portions, but more often. The ability to distinguish tastes and smells decreases, so the pet may refuse familiar food.

Cognitive functions

Memory and learning ability are reduced. The cat may forget the location of the litter box or food bowl. Spatial orientation becomes less accurate, especially at night.

Social interaction

The need for communication with the owner often increases. Older cats become more attached to humans, seeking more tactile contact. Some pets may become more vocal and demanding of attention.

Activity and movement

Jumps become less high, the cat may avoid high surfaces. Play sessions become shorter, the pet gets tired faster. Movements become more careful and measured.

Grooming

The ability to groom oneself is reduced. The coat may look disheveled and tangled. Grooming problems are especially noticeable in long-haired breeds.
