Throwing away banana peels and eggshells? In vain! These "waste" will turn your soil into a paradise for plants.

Fans of organic farming know what we are talking about.

Summer cottage tricks

Banana peels buried in a pot decompose, releasing potassium and magnesium, essential elements for flowering.

And crushed eggshells reduce soil acidity and repel slugs.

But there is a nuance: the peel needs to be washed to remove chemicals and dried, and the shell needs to be baked in the oven to kill bacteria.

Another secret is used tea. Add it to the soil for violets or ferns - tannin will strengthen the roots.

And coffee grounds will make the soil loose, but only for plants that like acidic soil: azaleas, hydrangeas.

However, do not overdo it: excess organic matter attracts midges. Sprinkle the surface of the soil with sand - and the pests will disappear.

And if the soil is covered with a white coating, it is not mold, but salts from the water.

Replant the plant, change the top layer of soil and water only with filtered water.

For emergency help, stick a tablet of activated charcoal into the soil - it will absorb toxins.

But ideal soil is not only organic matter.

For cacti, add perlite or vermiculite to the soil - they retain moisture but prevent the roots from rotting.

For orchids, mix pine bark, sphagnum moss and coconut chips - this substrate "breathes".

And if you have a ficus that is not growing, replace the top 3 cm of soil with a mixture of leaf soil and humus.

And remember: the soil ages. Every 2-3 years, change it completely, even if you do not transplant the plant into a larger pot.

Old soil loses nutrients and accumulates salts.

And for feeding, use not only store-bought fertilizers, but also “homemade” infusions: nettle, dandelion, onion peel.
